The Career And Philanthropy Of Betsy DeVos

Betsy DeVos serves in the role of the United States Secretary of Education. She was nominated to this position by President Donald Trump and was approved by the Senate in February 2017. Over the years she has been known as a strong advocate of school choice and private charter schools. She and her husband, Dick DeVos, have donated quite a bit of money to groups seeking to open up school choice in states across the United States. They also donate money to many other areas through their Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation.

Betsy DeVos was the chairwoman of Windquest Group, a private investing company she co-founded with her husband. They focus on manufacturing and technology companies. They also invest in clean energy companies such as those in solar and wind. They founded the company in 1989 and it is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their company is also the main investors in a company called Nuerocore and she served on its board. This company has a number of what they call brain performance centers which provide therapy for a number of different types of neurological disorders. They seek to retrain their patient’s brains by showing them movies which are then interrupted whenever the patient begins to become distracted from it.

It was also in 1989 that Betsy DeVos and her husband founded their family charity. The main areas they donate money to are education, the arts, leadership, community, and justice. Taking into account the entire DeVos family they are ranked # 24 by Forbes on the list of America’s top givers. They give money to a number of organizations such as the Center for Individual Rights, the Right to Life Michigan Education Fund, Michigan’s Foundation for Traditional Values, and Baptists for Life among them.

In 2010 their family foundation donated $22.5 million order to create a program to educate people in how to manage an arts institution as well as raise money for it. This program, called the DeVos Institute of Arts Management, is managed by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

One of the unfortunate realities of public schools is that they derive much of their money from the local community in which they operate. The side effect of this is that schools in poor areas do not have much in the way of resources which means that children do not receive anything approaching a quality education. Betsy DeVos for years has been an advocate of school choice as well as charter schools. She says these offer parents a way to obtain the education for their children that they deserve. She is a strong advocate of helping parents pay for this through school vouchers and/or educational tax credits.

Betsy DeVos has also donated her time and energy to organizations which seek to expand charter schools. In the past, she was the chairwoman of the board for Alliance for School Choice. She was also the co-founder and leader at All Children Matter which was a PAC that pushed for tax credits and school vouchers among other organizations she has been involved with.
